RSE - A Journey In Love
RSE stands for Relationships and Sex Education.
At SS Peter and Paul’s we follow the Diocesan resource 'A Journey In Love' and an aspect of the mystery of love is studied in each year group.
It is the recommended programme of study for Catholic schools for Sex and Relationship Education, and has been written as a progressive scheme of work that supports our updated schemes of work for RE and PSHE. The revised ‘A Journey in Love’ focusses on friendship, family, community, relationships and spirituality and supports the children’s development as young Catholics in the 21st century.
As children progress through school, they discover more and more about themselves and the wider world. This thirst for learning new things in all aspects of life is fostered by the school. We attempt to create a safe, stimulating environment for learning which supports all children in their development.
Within the context of this Christian community, we aim to foster the harmonious development of each child spiritually, morally, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically.
The content is age-appropriate and is taught with sensitivity, taking into account the children’s level of maturity in regard to the delivery of the lessons.
As with all aspects of learning, children are naturally curious and many will have questions related to their lessons. Opportunities to discuss questions form part of the lessons and, again, these are treated with care and understanding.
From September 2020, it is a statutory requirement that all schools in England and Wales are teaching Relationship and Sex Education as a fundamental part of the curriculum. As part of implementing the RSE curriculum, schools must consult with the children, parents, staff and governors to ensure there is a general consensus on our approaches to policy and the curriculum content.
Parents cannot opt-out of new statutory relationships education in primary schools. For of this reason, we asked all parents and carers to look at the ‘Journey In Love’ RSE programme as part of a consultation process.
Comments from parents and carers have been collated.
The survey took place between 1st October to 21st October 2021.
