Junior Travel Ambassadors 2024 - 2025
We achieved the Transport for London STARS Gold Accreditation for the second time in 2021.
As a school, we are committed to educating our children on how to travel to school safely and actively.
The school Travel Plan is updated annually and, every three years, we apply for accreditation. Our aim for 2023-2024 is to retain our gold accreditation.
The Junior Travel Ambassadors (JTA) scheme is a programme designed for primary school pupils to take the lead in promoting safe, active and independent travel within their school communities. This is a very important role, which helps the children develop communication skills whilst making a valuable contribution to the school.
JTA activities include:
- Promoting competitions and initiatives
- Devising their own school competitions
- Giving talks in assemblies
- Assisting with monitoring the school’s participation in the Travel Tracker
- Helping with Travel Plan tasks
Safe and Active travel activities at SS Peter and Paul’s School:
- School Streets: We are a ‘School Streets’ school. This means that we have introduced a clean air zone around our school. Vehicles are not allowed to enter the road when children are being dropped off and collected from school. This helps to reduce air pollution around our school, making the air our children breathe cleaner; it protects our children from the dangers of traffic at the school gate, preventing accidents and keeping children safe; it encourages families to walk and cycle to school, improving health and fitness.
- Road Safety Week: The JTAs deliver an assembly to the whole school during national Road Safety Week.
- Day-Glo Day: Children are encouraged to come to school wearing bright accessories to highlight the importance of being seen clearly when travelling during the winter months.
- Be Bright, Be Seen competition: The JTAs organise a poster competition to promote the importance of being seen by cars when travelling on roads and pavements.
- Road Safety Theatre Shows: Each year, a Road Safety theatre show is performed at our school to teach children about road safety in a fun, engaging way.
- ‘Play in a Day’ Drama Workshop: Year 5 spent the day with a visiting theatre group, working on a road safety play. They performed their play at the end of the day to the whole school, delivering valuable lessons on safety.
- Pedestrian Training: Children in Year 4 have had the opportunity to take part in Pedestrian Training to ensure that they understand how to travel safely and cross roads safely.
- Living Streets Travel Tracker: This is an interactive platform which tracks pupils’ travel modes to school as part of WOW - the year-round walk to school challenge. Each moth children can earn WOW badges for travelling actively to school.
- The Big Walk and Wheel: Each year we take part in this national event in which we encourage all children to walk, cycle or scoot to school. Modes of travel are recorded daily and we compete against other schools.
- Cycle Training: Every year, instructors from Cycle Confident deliver a range of cycle training programmes such as Balance Bike Training, Learn to Ride lessons and Levels 1 and 2 Bikeability.
- Bike: The annual visit from Dr. Bike is very popular and ensures that children’s bikes are roadworthy.
- Cycle/Scooter Storage: We are very fortunate that we have a large storage area for bikes and scooters. We also have 12 school bikes of various sizes which are used for our cycling club and during the cycle training sessions. This enables children who may not have their own bike to learn to ride and take part in cycling activities.
- Cycling Club: In the summer term, we have an after-school cycling club which takes place on the school playground.
